[ part two ] Instead of a game at the baby shower, my sister and I thought that it would be fun to do a DIY. We made paper lunch sacks with all the supplies + instructions to make little hair clips for the baby. Above are some of my favorites…even my niece London made baby Adelaide (Addie) one!
[ part one ] This past Sunday we threw my older sister a vintage school themed baby shower…she’s a teacher. It was so much fun to plan. I designed her invitations to look like a vintage flashcard. It has been really cool being pregnant at the same time with her, even though this is her first baby, my second. And she is having a GIRL! Hence the cake…which is a traditional cake that my family makes for anyone expecting. I always decorate it so it has a modern twist. Look for part two, my little sister and I planned a fun DIY for the guests.

Happy February! Just wanted to share this little DIY garland that I made yesterday. My grandma gave my sister (who is a first grade teacher) these old vintage letters that were once used for a school bulletin board. She wasn’t really into them so she gave them to me…of course I found a use for them! I love how it turned out…so tiny and delicate.

ps. the weather here is incredible today…blogging (+ working) outside while Jax is running around the backyard with the dog.
The nursery! Agh…if this baby arrives as early as Jax did, that means I only have 9 weeks to go. Woah. I’ve gotta get this little guy’s home ready! Inspired by the rooms above…I know what color I want to paint the walls and what I want the curtains to look like. But the floor…I hate it! I just want to rip it up and paint the hardwood white! Why don’t I? Well, I’ve asked my husband so many times. No, everytime. It’s pretty damaged, so my solution is to get an awesome rug and I will be happy. I love this citrine stripe rug, but my budget is limited. I will have to try this DIY tutorial…seems pretty easy. So much to do…
Friday Flashback: Some of you may remember, last year Jaxon was Oscar the Grouch for Halloween. Oddly this post is my most liked post on Little Frills. I have officially been challenged to top this costume. Hopefully my plan for this year will be just as successful.
Many of you have asked me how I made it. I’ve been kicking myself for not taking photos along the way for a DIY post. So I will just explain…
WHAT YOU WILL NEED:
footed sleeper that zips
hat with ear flaps (I got lucky and found one with a furry brim for the eye brow)
gray/brown fur
lots of green fuzzy yarn
tall hat box with lid
chrome duck tape
scissors
needle & thread
INSTRUCTIONS FOR OSCAR:
1. Cut 6 inch strips of green yarn. How many? about 2000.
2. Next, cut 2 half inch slits about a half inch apart. Like this: | |
Leave about 1 inch between each set of slits all over the sleeper and hat.
3. Then, slip 2 strands of yarn through each slit evenly. Like this: —|-|—
Tie in a knot. Be sure not to tie and yarn across the zipper!
4. If the hat does not have fur already sew some along the front edge of the hat.
NOTE: Steps 1-3 are pretty time consuming, so allow several late nights to complete.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE TRASH CAN:
1. Cut several strips of chrome duck tape the height of the hat box, roll strips (sticky side out) and apply them vertically to the side, 3 inches apart to make the ridges.
2. Next, cut 4 strips to go around the top and bottom edges of the lid and base of the box. Roll and apply.
3. Then, cover the entire hat box and lid with tape.
4. Don’t forget to make a handle for the lid. Make a simple one by folding over some tape (sticky side in) several times and then tape on the top of the lid in the center.
5. Attach lid to the top of hat with extra yarn.
Look at this! Designer Jason Gomez created this awesome alphabet installation for his new baby girl’s nursery. I love the colors, the pattern and all the different letters. My favorite is the…well I really can’t choose just one, they are all lovely! This makes me want to do a little canvas series for Jax’s room.

Last night my sister and my niece London came to visit. Jaxon was so excited to have a playmate. But I was so embarrassed…my house was a wreck! With all the wedding planning, things just keep piling up. I often wonder…why is it so hard to just put something back where it goes? Well I found these DIY felt storage bowls over at the b-line, that could really help me out.
I think Jaxon’s baby nursery might just have to transform soon, from cars and airplanes to a big boys room with spaceships and rockets. I like moons…anything relating to space, if you couldn’t tell by this post, or this post or even Jaxon’s valentines. And this DIY garland by Guusje Wannet of Ontwerpfabriek Appeltaart my friends will have to make an appearance! Guusje is a mom of three and a textile artist that makes lovely paper cuts and screen prints. Her work is outstanding. Give her blog a visit to find out how to make this beauty!
Happy Friday…have a grand weekend

Finalist, Elka Karl submitted this fabric pup tent in the ReadyMade 100. This would be a fun dig project to make this summer on a warm night…Jaxon would love it! It’s a great place to read books, play games and hide. Find all the step-by-step instructions here.

Oh my, we have been busy planning our wedding…all the details…I always knew how much preparation went in to a wedding, but it is ten times more when its your own! And I am not the most organized person either. My brain is a bit overloaded with inspiration. I am keeping most of my ideas here, so I remember. Next on the agenda is attire for the little ones. I want my little peanut to wear a tiny bow tie! I found this great tutorial over at papernstitch…a guest post from Jessica of Living the Swell Life. Now I just have to screen-print the fabric and give it a whirl.
It is hard to believe that I am planning Jaxon’s FIRST birthday party! It feels like he was just a tiny baby…but he has grown into such a happy little boy, full of mischief. I’ve found a ton of grand ideas from Hip Hip Hooray, a blog for little kids and big celebrations. I also came across My Little Day, a site where you can buy supplies, modern decorations, fun favors and even costumes to make your little ones birthday a festival. Since I am a designer, his invitations have been thought out for a long time. As far as everything else…more details to come!
Lori Joy Smith, a very talented artist and illustrator made these adorable felt albums for her little one, Ila. [She made some last year for her daughter Sosi too.] Every year for their birthdays she prints out her favorite photos puts them inside. I think that I will be making one for Jaxon this year for sure…he loves looking at photos, especially when he sees himself.
So if you are interested in making them for your little one…she has designed a tutorial that you can download here. I just love her illustrations. Thank you for sharing Lori!
Storybird is a collaborative storytelling site that makes it simple to create short, visual stories that you can share and print. This month, Cheerios is presenting a challenge about Curiosity. I’m taking a poll…what do you think Jaxon should be for his first Halloween?
- Chip, the teacup from Beauty and the Beast
- Oscar the Grouch, from Sesame Street
- Handy Manny, from the Disney channel
- a Sock Monkey
- or a Robot
If you have any other great ideas…just comment below. What is your child going to be?
